Much like starting a new business, the first year of our association was critical: WEMA started as an idea, a vision. The founding members of WEMA took this cause and contributed their resources and talents. They took their vision and created an association. Through focused hard work, the first year of the Western Exempt Market Association was a great success. As many of our members know, we created this organization out of a need to be a positive, proactive force in the exempt market industry. As Nadine Wellwood, President of Wealth Terra Capital so elegantly put it: “Either we as an industry start working together to look at the bigger picture and develop our own standards or else we will have them dictated to us.” That is what our efforts at WEMA are about. Even though our members compete for business and investor funds, our industry has to unite to properly manage the bigger picture of reputation and regulatory changes.
Over the year, Ben Armstrong and WEMA’s directors established a prominent member base representing issuers, dealers, service providers, and dealing representatives. WEMA has been promoting our industry through participation in trade shows, networking events, our newsletter, and our website. In the past year we have also executed two successful mailing campaigns to regulators at both the CSA and OSC, thanks to the great support and enthusiastic participation of our members.
In the coming year, we will look to further expand our member base, establish this quarterly magazine as the principle magazine in the Exempt market, as well as focus our efforts to revise our website to include an investor education section. In an effort to reach out to more advisors registered in other categories, we are looking to hold investment forums. The purpose is to demystify the exempt market. Watch your inbox for details…We are also planning additional networking events for our members with special guests whom are key figures to our industry. And of course, we will be conducting more campaigns and lobbying efforts to regulators and decision makers as the need arises.
In WEMA’s commitment to be a proactive agent for change in the exempt market, we have started this quarterly magazine for our members, by our members. Our mission is to protect the integrity of the Exempt Market and be a unified voice to help shape our industry in best practises, public perception, regulation, investor education, and advisor support.

The purpose of this publication is to serve WEMA members, and the deadline for submissions for our September Issue is August 15, 2012.
