Connecting companies with investors just got easier for Canadian dealers with the launch of The Funding Portal’s new Exempt Market Dealer portal.
The Funding Portal’s first iteration, which launched in 2013, was a 2-way platform assisting companies to secure funds from government.
In spring 2014, the portal became registered by Ontario, Alberta and other provincial securities commissions as Canada’s first EMD portal able to assist companies to secure both government funding and private capital.
Rather than competing with dealers, The Funding Portal has chosen to become an enabling platform within the dealer community. It aggregates information about dealers that wish to participate on the platform. It pre-qualifies companies that are ready for private financing, then matches qualified issuers to participating dealers, consistent with KYC, KYP and suitability standards.
At the heart of this new EMD enabling platform is the portal’s MyFundCard™.
THE MYFUNDCARD NETWORK
“MyFundCard is like LinkedIn, but for private capital, business financing and government incentives,” said Chris Naprawa, Managing Director of Primary Capital Inc., an EMD with offices in Vancouver and Toronto. “The network helps me save time and stay connected—all I need to do is indicate what kinds of companies I’m interested in, and the system automatically alerts me via email when exact matches are found.”
By creating a MyFundCard profile, dealers can promote their company and services and become eligible for matches to both investors and issuers seeking dealer services. More than 17,000 companies use the portal each month—overwhelmingly CEOs, CFOs and entrepreneurs seeking financing for their companies.
“It is hard to imagine a more targeted set of business ‘eyeballs’ or more effective place to promote your services as a dealer.” said Chris Naprawa of Primary Capital.
HOW IT WORKS
To enable matches, dealers, issuers and investors provide 14 data points in their MyFundCard profile, including region, industry sector, amount and type of financing, stage of commercialization, and investment size. The Funding Portal then uses advanced search optimization technologies and artificial intelligence to generate highly qualified leads that are closely aligned to each party’s objectives.
When a match is established, participating dealers can enter a Secure Issuer Workroom to view the issuer’s offering documents and initial disclosures, and form dealer and investor syndicates. Once the primary market activity is closed, dealers can establish Dealer Workrooms to support secondary market activities on the portal.
DEALER TOOLS ON THE PORTAL
The Funding Portal EMD platform also offers a growing suite of tools and templates to benefit dealers, including a Due Diligence Scorecard; FundingSources™ reports on government funding for dealer’s portfolio companies; and FundingReport, a weekly summary of companies securing funding.
Having an understanding of both government funding and private financing offerings is a clear advantage for dealers. Canada’s incentives financing market provides more than 4,500 sources of government funding disbursing $30 billion annually to Canadian businesses.
To date, more than 35,000 dealers, issuers, investors, funders, and commercialization partners, ranging from universities to corporate partners, have registered on The Funding Portal. Chances are that more target clients will learn about your services on the portal than on your own website or through other advertising and marketing channels.
The cost to create a MyFundCard profile and register on the network is just $20/month. To learn more and set up your MyFundCard profile, go to thefundingportal.com/myfundcard.
